Filing For Bankruptcy

Before you begin the bankruptcy process, you’ll need to gather volumes of key financial information and documents.  Below is a list of items that you may want to organize before you decide to file. This will also help your bankruptcy attorney guide you in determining which type of bankruptcy is best for you.

Prepare for Bankruptcy with a Document Checklist

Income Documentation

  • Income tax returns from the last two years including W-2, 1099 and K-1 information
  • Pay stubs and bank statements from last six months
  • Records of earnings from social security, disability, alimony, disability, child support, and other investment income
  • Life insurance policies

Real Estate

  • Copy of the deed and mortgage
  • Appraisal or estimate of your home’s value


  • Proof of ownership, vehicle title
  • Loan statement
  • Estimate of your vehicle’s value

Financial Records

  • Bank account records and other financial accounts

Credits and Debts

  • List of all creditors, including addresses, and the amounts and description of each debt
  • Recent bill from each of creditors
  • Current credit report

List of Assets

  • Household goods, furniture,  books, jewelry, works of art, etc.
  • Monthly expenses

Legal Documents

  • Collection letters you’ve received
  • Notices of foreclosure on your home, utility shut off,  or vehicle or property repossession 
  • Court documents you’ve been served
